Learning through Work
Skills for Care has published Learning through Work, a series of learning modules that develop communication and number skills in the adult social care workplace. They are designed to help supervisors deliver bite-size chunks of learning wherever natural learning opportunities arise as part of day to day care work. Each booklet is divided into segments that can be read in less than three minutes and also includes learning questions and quizzes to promote discussion. The booklets include Reporting, Writing skills, Bodily functions, Physical Health, Using numbers, Number skills and How much, how often. Supporting you and your staff ~ resources, information, advice and training available.
“If you think your organisation isn’t affected by poor Skills for Life (communication and maths skills), then think again. Government research shows that, in the South West, 55% of adults do not have the written and spoken communication skills needed to function effectively at work, and 77% do not have maths skills at a level needed by today’s businesses”. There is plenty of free support available to enable you to encourage and support your staff to improve their spoken and written communication skills and basic maths. Support is also available for staff with ESOL needs (English for Speakers of Other Languages). So doing will save you money and help to avoid potentially serious mistakes occurring in the workplace.
Care Learning and Train to Gain are working together to support you and your staff access appropriate Skills for Life resources and training.

The Golden Thread Project
The Golden Thread project is helping more people in the South West to obtain ‘functional’ levels of literacy and numeracy. It is doing this by supporting practitioners who are working with learners with Skills for Life needs. This includes assessors, verifiers, vocational trainers, business development units and learning support staff as well as specialist teachers. It will run until June 2011.
The key to the project is the team of Professional Development Coordinators (PDCs) who work across the region. They work closely with their local Training Provider Networks to identify and meet the development needs of organisations and practitioners. They run events and other development activities, mentor individual organisations and contribute to events being run by other organisations. In this way they weave Skills for Life practice into professional development activities that are already taking place and can respond very flexibly to individual needs.
Check the website for more information about the project, news of forthcoming events and links to the Training Provider Networks: http://www.learning-southwest.org.uk/page/Golden-Thread Or contact your local Professional Development Coordinator if you are delivering or would like to support delivery of literacy, language and / or numeracy to your clients:
